Dog names don’t have to be unique, they can be as common as Fido or Lucy. But do you really want a common name for your unique dog? I didn’t think so. Some of the most unique resources to find dog names are in the literature of today and yesterday.

I’m going to try an experiment with you. I’m going to take some books off of my shelf and open them up to see what kinds of unique dog names I can find. This should be fun because I have quite an eclectic arrangement of titles to choose from.

We’ll start with some classics. Shakespeare’s Hamlet should be interesting. Keep in mind that I’m not only going to use character’s names, I’m looking for any word that will make a unique dog name. Here are the unique dog names I found from Hamlet:

Hamlet; Rosecrantz; Majestic; Ophelia; Polonius; Reynaldo; My Lord; Marry; Horatio; Marcellus; Quicksilver; Lazar; Ghost; Thorn; Villian; Vicious; Nemean; Spirit; Bernardo; Elsinore; King; Queen; Prince; Thunder; Bear; Chief; Courtier; Madam; Hecuba; Laertes; Daisy; Captain; Chant; Steward; Master; Rosemary; Violet; Willow; Sliver

Quite a lot of words that could be unique dog names from Hamlet. Let’s try some Mark Twain. I have a text of famous essays of Twain’s. The names I was able to find in this book are:

Siam; Jingle; Punch; Sawyer; Benny; Dixon; Huck; Pudd’nhead; Roxy; Percy; Shabby; Pappy; Hadley (actually Hadleyburg); Slobber; Rayburn; Elfonzo; Frisbie; Sawdust; Major; Flint; Gimlet; Assassin; Sammy; Holmes; Archy; Sherlock; Colonel; Sunshine; Abby; Prattler; Lasca; Jewel; Kalula; Sabbath; Blake; Charm; Beast; Frog; Smiley

I’m not even sure what some of those words mean, but they sound like they would make cool dog names. I’m going to have to look Prattler up, I think. The next book is not one that many people would think to find dog names in, but if you’re a mechanic you might. I’m going to look through the Chilton’s Repair Manual for the 1981-92 Ford Escort / Mercury Lynx. Don’t ask me why I have this book, my daughter totalled the car about six years ago. Here’s what the Chilton’s gave me:

Chilton; Mercury; Lynx; Crankshaft; Sparky (spark plug); Aero; Socket; Manny (manifold); Poppet; Nitro or Nitrous; Gasket; Woodruf; Oily; Piston; Cam; Sprocket; Flywheel; Axle; Bolt; Bracket; Coil; Throttle; Sol (solenoid); Hazard; Puddles; Volt

Those are unique, but some are really kind of fun. One more book just for a good mix of new and old. This one is a book called How to Read the Tarot by Sylvia Abraham. We should find some different dog names in here.

Tarot; Sylvia; Abraham; Pisces; Happy; Scorpio; Karma; Liquor; Gent; Leo; Red; Hermit; Fire; Justice; Empress; Pentacle; Magic; Ace; Mercury; Venus; Cheater; Faith; Zodiac; Fortune; Neptune; Star; Moon; Cosmos; Sun or Sunny; Pluto; Judge; Arcana

Now that you see how many great names can be found in books of all kinds, go pick up a book from your bookshelf and see what kind of unique dog names you can find.
