Boy Dog Names From History

Are you thinking of getting a new male puppy friend for your dog, but not sure where to find the best dog names?  Boy dog names are easy to find if you know where to look.  You can buy a book of baby names in the aisle at the grocery store or find one at the library.  These books are a great start because they can give you some good boy names, but the best boy dog names aren’t going to be found in a baby name book.  You’re not likely to open the book to names like T-Bone or Slugger or Ragamuffin.  And you probably will want to find a name that fits well with your girl dog’s name, too.

Some of the best boy dog names for doggie couples can be found in history.  You can pair up Bonnie and Clyde, Samson and Delilah, Anthony and Cleopatra or Adam and Eve.  Maybe you have a couple of boy dogs that need names.  How about Lewis and Clark, David and Goliath, Crusoe and Friday, or Yin and Yang for some great historical combinations.

If you’re not looking for boy dog names for couples, there are even more to choose from history for a single dog.  Roche (pronounced Rock) was the patron saint of dogs.  Francis or Assisi are great names and named for Saint Francis of Assisi, also well known for his love for animals.  Some famous gangsters of today and yesterday had some great dog names, like Capone, Gatti, or Sammy the Bull.  How about some military dog names from history like General or Sherman, Lee, as in Robert E. or you can go with a full name like Ulysses S. Grant.

Mythological names can be some of the best boy dog names.  Ajax was a Trojan war hero.  Mars was the god of war and Morpheus was the god of dreams.  Mercury was the messenger to the gods.  Sol and Apollo were the gods of the sun and Vulcan was the god of fire.  Orion (pronounced O’Ryan) was a mighty hunter and Oberon was king of the fairies.  Of course, there was Zeus, the god that ruled the world, or his son Perseus.

Boy dog names can be found in historical literature, too.  Homer, the Greek poet, or his book Odyssey are great names.  The main character in The Odyssey was Odysseus, another fantastic dog name.  Shakespeare is a wonderful name, as are some of his characters Romeo, Iago, or Othello.  Tolstoy wrote War and Peace or Twain who wrote Huckleberry Finn are good boy dog names, too.

Other historical figures that make great male dog names are Houdini, the great escape artist, or Jackson, the Civil War general, or Zane Grey, the popular American author and a perfect name for your Greyhound or Weimaraner.

History gives us some of the best boy dog names you will ever find.  Historical figures offer names that everyone can love, whether you are a history buff or not, the names in history are just too cool to pass up for your next dog names.
